ILS Hackathon 2025 - Advanced training for Aviation IT Specialists

July 28, 2025

The marathon for hackers: for a complete week, our software development workshop brought together aerospace students from the University of Stuttgart and employees of ILS.

Aircraft systems are among the most complex and safety-critical systems in the world  - and become more complex with each new generation of vehicles. To make the development and verification of aircraft systems efficient, model-based systems engineering (MBSE) should be used digitally, collaboratively and consistently.

The challenge was the same for all participants: the focus was on a specially developed MBSE framework. Although everyone had their own task, they all had to work together to build a minimalist, browser-based, modular, distributed and freely accessible meta-modeling tool that is based on Eclipse EMF but takes a modern, web-based approach using the latest versions of tools from the University of Stuttgart.

After some initial puzzling, heads and laptops were spinning, all of them programming, discussing and programming again. The task set by Prof. Björn Annighöfer was a tough one  - but thanks to the intensive exchange of ideas and close cooperation between everyone, the challenge was ultimately mastered together.

The past week has welded us even closer together and brought us many new ways of thinking. Mutual support as well as lots of coffee, snacks, pretzels and pizza helped us overcome some despair.

The reward was not only a new webapp for aircraft systems modeling, but also burgers fresh from the BBQ-grill  - made by Prof. Björn Annighöfer.
